Six islands no one wants you to discover

Discovering new places is part of the reason for yachting. Places concealed from you and that you will want to conceal from everyone else. And the jewel in the idea is finding these little secrets not too far from the more obvious hot spots. Edmiston presents six delightfully obscure islands of desire. Just, not too obscure.

Koufonisi

In the Cyclades between Mykonos and Santorini. Special? The beaches of Pori and others with no name but with rocks and crevices that are scuba-snorkelling bliss. Dine out at Nikitouri or Gastronautis. Get a permit for the archaeological dig on Keros. Koufonisi – a tiny secret in the Cyclades.

Favignana

Favignana in the egadi islands west of sicily. Special? This butterfly-shaped island is both exquisitely pretty and historically interesting with local street party festivals. The water is so clear that fish cast shadows in the shallows. Anchor in the silence and solitude of your own bay. Cruise to trapani or marsala for culture and cuisine.

Porquerolles

Not far from the action of St Tropez. The island remains enigmatically quiet and contemplative. Special? The Carmignac gallery has works by Warhol, Lichtenstein, Richter, Basquiat, Haring and Barceló both inside and throughout the garden. Dine at Michelin star Le Mas du Langoustier.

Cavallo

One of the Lavezzi islands off Bonifacio on the southern tip of Corscia. Special factors? Pristine white sand beaches protected by wind-sculpted rocks – off the scale of beautiful. Hotel des Pêcheurs, exactly the resort-spa-restaurant that you would dream to find in the middle of nowhere. And, as if by magic, here it is.

S'espalmador

A sandspit away from Formentera in the Balearics. Special? Anchor off Racó de s’Alga to beachcomb in the brilliance of this amazing islandscape. This beach-yacht combination is hard to beat. For action, just cruise over to Formentera or Ibiza.

Vis

Close to hvar in croatia. Special? A secret island, closed until 1991. Take a tender into the eerie submarine silos. Anchor off stiniva beach, dine at projoda. Cruise to miniscule budikovac island. Bask in the vibrant turquoise lagoon for paddleboardscuba- snorkel sessions. Wander ashore to meet andro, the island’s only resident. He tends the animals, grows the vegetables and cooks. If you like different – this is different.
