On board TWIZZLE: Setting sail on a superyacht charter Fiji adventure

Renowned for its turquoise waters, expansive marinas and relaxed sailing regulations, Fiji is a dream superyacht destination. A Fiji sailing charter on board TWIZZLE yacht brings an added layer of prestige, pairing world-class sailing with one of the finest yachts in the region.

As a graceful bluewater sailor with a shallow draught and an 11-knot cruising speed, the 57.5m Royal Huisman-designed yacht TWIZZLE is perfectly suited to exploring the remote anchorages of this South Pacific paradise.

With over 14 years’ experience on board large superyachts, Captain Colin Johnson has expertly led TWIZZLE on extensive cruising through the South Pacific, including Fiji and French Polynesia.

With his deep knowledge of the region, charter guests can enjoy thoughtfully designed routes that establish an easy sailing rhythm, with manageable daily passages, comfortable cruising and a journey that unfolds naturally.

Accompanied by a professional, long-term crew of 11, Colin’s luxury yacht charter Fiji itineraries provide the perfect balance of luxury and adventure.

Fiji: The ultimate playground for a luxury adventure

Situated in the South Pacific, just 17 degrees below the Equator, Fiji is an archipelago of more than 330 tropical isles, making it an ideal cruising ground for intrepid sailors.

Colin says Fiji is one of the most rewarding cruising grounds he has ever experienced: “What makes it so special is the variety, one day you can be anchored off a perfect white beach in the Yasawas, the next you are diving soft coral walls, exploring limestone caves, hiking to waterfalls, or being welcomed into a local village. It is a cruising ground that constantly feels alive and full of discovery.”

And while the friendliness of Fijians is legendary – don’t miss the local custom of Loloma Hour where you’ll be warmly embraced by your hosts – a luxury yacht charter is by far the best way to explore the Fiji islands beyond the reach of traditional resorts.

The ultimate Fiji superyacht charter itinerary: A 14-day expedition through Fiji’s hidden islands

Curated by Captain Colin, the sample itinerary below provides a taste of the bespoke experiences that define a Fijian voyage.

Taking in some of Fiji’s most spectacular island groups, this journey offers an ideal mix of adventure and relaxation, with active pursuits such as surfing and diving complemented by memorable cultural experiences and wonderful wildlife encounters, plus lots of time to soak up the tranquillity of some of Fiji’s more secluded anchorages.

Day 1 – Malolo Island: Surfing Fiji’s legendary breaks – 10nm (approx. 1 hour)

Just a short hop from the main Fiji yacht charter launchpad of Port Denarau, the island of Malolo in the Mamanuca Islands offers access to some of Fiji’s most famous surfing destinations, including Cloudbreak – a break favoured by some of the world’s best pro-surfers.

Colin says Malolo is a wonderful place to begin because it gives guests that immediate feeling of arrival. “You leave Denarau behind and very quickly the water changes colour, the pace slows down, and Fiji starts to reveal itself,” he says. “I always like this as a first stop because it is close enough to be easy, but beautiful enough to make guests feel they have properly escaped.”

Crew can arrange surf lessons on this first day, transferring guests on board one of two Castoldi tenders to appropriate breaks depending on experience, while guests looking for a more relaxing start to their charter can slide into holiday mode at the island’s luxury Six Senses Fiji resort.

Day 2 – Castaway Island: Exploring a Fijian icon – 15nm (approx. 1.5 hours)

The idyllic island of Monuriki that stole the show in the Tom Hanks’ film Castaway is the kind of place few people would mind being stranded on.

Thankfully, on a TWIZZLE yacht charter, your sea sanctuary – complete with private chef and fully stocked kitchen – is never far away, meaning you can enjoy an immersive Fiji adventure without any of the deprivation Hanks’ character endured.

Colin says: “Castaway has that classic Fijian island feel – palm trees, clear water, sand underfoot and a very relaxed atmosphere. It is the sort of place where guests naturally settle into charter mode. I like it because it is simple, beautiful and very easy to enjoy.”

Day 3 – Naviti Island: Snorkelling and swimming with manta rays – 25nm (approx. 2.5 hours)

The largest of Fiji’s Yasawa Islands, Navita is one of the best places in Fiji to see manta rays, so make good use of TWIZZLE’s snorkelling gear and take the plunge.

Colin says: “Naviti is where the Yasawas start to feel more remote. There is a real sense of space here, and the snorkelling can be excellent, especially with the manta rays. I enjoy this stop because guests often begin to slow down properly here — swimming, snorkelling, walking the beach and taking in the colours of the islands around them.”

While on Naviti, pay a visit to Soso village, where you can take a tour and buy authentic handicrafts to take home – it’s a great way to give back to the communities you are visiting.

Day 4 – Blue Lagoon: Fiji’s most famous lagoon – 20nm (approx. 2 hours)

For the next stop, Colin recommends a visit to one of Fiji’s most iconic attractions: the Blue Lagoon, made famous by the film of the same name.

With an early start afforded by your superyacht charter, you can visit this popular sight before the day-trippers arrive and explore the stunning reefs in peace.

Colin says: “The Blue Lagoon may be famous, but it still has a special effect when you arrive by yacht. The colour of the water is extraordinary, and the anchorage has a calmness to it that guests always remember. It is one of those places where you want to spend time on deck just looking around. It’s a classic beach barbecue stop over.”

Day 5 – Sawa-I-Lau caves: Explore hidden limestone caverns – 20nm (approx. 2 hours)

Another short cruise away, the Sawa-i-Lau Caves are among the northern Yasawa Islands’ most impressive natural attractions.

The ancient limestones are known for their hidden, turquoise swimming pools and are deeply rooted in local legend.

Colin says: “Sawa-I-Lau is one of the most memorable experiences in the Yasawas. It adds a real sense of adventure to the itinerary. I like taking guests there because it is completely different from the beaches and reefs — the caves feel ancient, dramatic and slightly mysterious, and they always leave an impression.”

Day 6 – Yasawa Islands: Narewa Bay and untouched beaches – 20nm (approx. 2 hours)

Your journey continues to Narewa Bay, on the northern tip of Naviti Island, home to one of Fiji’s finest beaches.

Accessible only by private boat, this secluded anchorage feels worlds away from everyday life. Spend the day paddling through crystal-clear waters, exploring the coastline by kayak or SUP, or simply relaxing on the white sand as hermit crabs emerge from their shells along the shore.

Colin says: “This area captures the untouched side of Fiji. The beaches, the colours and the quietness are what make it special. For me, this is one of the places where Fiji feels most pure: remote anchorages, beautiful water and very little around you except the islands themselves.”

Day 7 – Yadua Island: A remote passage north – 90nm (approx 8.5-9 hours)

The first long passage of this private yacht charter in Fiji sees you head towards Savusavu and Colin recommends stopping at this undeveloped island, which is home to endangered species of iguana, en route.

“Yadua feels like a proper passage stop and gives the itinerary a real sense of exploration,” Colin says. “It is remote and much less travelled, which is part of the appeal. I like including places like this because they remind guests that travelling by yacht allows you to reach areas most visitors never see.”

Day 8 – Savusavu: Diving and hiking in Fiji’s hidden paradise – 20nm (approx. 2 hours)

From Yadua, it’s just a short passage to the town of Savusavu, known as Fiji’s ‘Hidden Paradise’ on Vanua Levu.

Something of a metropolis by Fiji standards, Savisavu is home to Nakam thermal hot springs and the excellent Jean-Michel Cousteau Dive Centre, as well as J.Hunter Pearls – for rare pearls – Vuadomo Waterfall, the Flora Tropica Botanical Gardens, and chocolate tours at KokoMana

“Savusavu has a lovely local character and is one of Fiji’s hidden gems,” Colin says. “It feels authentic and welcoming, with beautiful scenery around it. I enjoy this stop because it gives guests a different side of Fiji – not just beaches, but a real island town, nature, hiking and access to excellent diving.”

Day 9 – Viani Bay: Diving Fiji’s Great White Wall – 35nm (approx 3.5 hours)

Viani Bay is one of Fiji’s most renowned diving sites, providing access to the colourful Rainbow Reef, which is home to the legendary Great White Wall.

It’s the perfect opportunity for guests to try out TWIZZLE’S diving gear when conditions are right, with soft corals and reef life that never fail to amaze.

“I love this stop because it gives adventurous guests a genuine world-class underwater highlight,” Colin says.

Day 10 – Tavenui: Hiking and diving in Fiji’s Garden Island – 30nm (approx 3 hours)

Fiji’s third largest island, situated just a few miles east of Vanua Levu, is often also considered its most beautiful, thanks to the natural attractions of the Tavoro Waterfalls in Bouma National Heritage Park, and the scenic Lavena Coastal Walk.

Colin says: “Taveuni is one of my favourite areas because it has so much variety. It is lush, green and full of life, with waterfalls, rainforest, hiking and exceptional diving nearby. It is called the Garden Island for good reason, and it brings a completely different energy to the itinerary.”

A little further east, there’s also the option for guests to visit the luxury Fiji resort of Laucala for a day of eco escapism.

Day 11 – Koro Island: Experience authentic island life – 55nm (approx 5-5.5 hours)

This lush, shark-tooth-shaped volcanic island in Fiji’s Lomaiviti group, is ideal for eco-adventures and experiencing authentic village culture.

Colin says: “Koro is peaceful and less developed, which is exactly why I like it. It gives guests a chance to experience a more authentic pace of island life. Stops like this are important because they show the human side of Fiji – the villages, the warmth of the people and the feeling of being somewhere genuine.”

Day 12 – Ovalau Island: Fiji’s historic heart – 50nm (approx 5 hours)

Staying in the Lomaiviti Islands, Ovalau Island offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, centred on the UNESCO World Heritage town of Levuka.

Visitors can explore 19th-century colonial architecture, hike Mission Hill, visit the Levuka Museum and Community Centre, and spend their time hiking, diving, and fishing.

Colin says: “Ovalau brings history and depth to the itinerary. Levuka and the island’s past give guests a different perspective on Fiji, beyond the beaches and reefs. I like this stop because it adds context and character, and it helps tell a fuller story of the country.”

Day 13 – Nananu-i-Ra: The ultimate Fiji adventure in watersports – 39nm (approx 4 hours)

Located off the northern coast of Viti Levu, Nananu-i-Ra Island is a tranquil, undeveloped paradise best known for its world-class windsurfing, kiteboarding, and some of the best snorkelling and diving in Fiji, making it a perfect place to delve into TWIZZLE’s yacht toy box one last time.

Colin says: “Nananu-i-Ra is a great final adventure stop. It is a place where guests can be active, whether that is watersports, tender exploring, paddleboarding or simply enjoying the conditions on the water. I like ending with this kind of energy before returning to Denarau.”

Day 14 – Nadi – Port Denarau departure

After an adventurous couple of weeks, round your Fiji yacht charter with a return to Port Denarau, where you can reacclimatise to civilisation slowly at some of the upscale restaurants around the marina or with an afternoon spent shopping some of the nearby smart boutiques.

A captain’s perspective on why this route works

Colin describes Fiji as one of the ultimate luxury adventure destinations because it offers a rare combination of beautiful and safe cruising, world-class reefs, surf, caves, waterfalls, hiking, fishing, remote anchorages and genuine Fijian hospitality.

“What I love most is that no two days feel the same,” he says. “On TWIZZLE, guests can have a full adventure during the day and then return to complete comfort, privacy and space in the evening. That balance is what makes Fiji such a special South Pacific yacht charter destination.”
