The festival aims to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema and, every year, the island comes alive with actors, actresses, film directors, celebrities and other professionals from the film industry attending screenings of the latest movies.
Retrospectives and tributes to major figures in film are also arranged to offer a better insight into the history of cinema, and there is an extensive list of awards up for grabs, with the most prestigious being the Golden Lion, presented to the best film screened at the festival.
