The 21.94-metre RUGOSA classic sailing yacht is a well-known regatta winner that has raced in the Mediterranean and the USA.
After being cruised and raced extensively by the same owner for 30 years, she’s now looking for a new owner prepared to invest in a refit.
The RUGOSA yacht was built by Herreshoff in 1926 and became one of a distinguished line of New York Yacht Club 40 racing yachts known as the ‘Fighting Forties ’.
Only four of the 12 hulls survive today, and RUGOSA remains the most coveted of Nathanael G Herreshoff’s NYYC One-Design class. She stands apart from her sisterships because she was built as a yawl and still has the potential to beat the existing NY40s on the Mediterranean circuit.
The RUGOSA yacht has already proven her racing prowess with a host of regatta wins. The original RUGOSA yacht owner first tasted victory in 1928 with her win at the Bermuda Race.
She changed hands multiple times over the years, winning numerous races, before she was acquired by Halsey Herreshoff, the grandson of her designer. He cruised and raced her extensively across the east coast of the USA and Europe. Under his stewardship, she famously beat 58 top classics in the 2001 America’s Cup Jubilee in Cowes.
The RUGOSA yacht for sale was last refitted in 2007 when much structural work was done. But because she’s sailed many miles since then, her next custodian should expect to undertake another refit to bring her back up to perfect condition.
The accommodation on the RUGOSA classic yacht is a traditional open-plan cabin that can sleep eight guests. This layout is ideal for a racing crew, regatta charter or family use.
Her main salon leads to a handsome gimballed dining table with a galley forward that has kept its original design. Aft lies a navigation station with a chart table and twin seating.
